Paks has always dreamed of being a warrior. When her father tries to wed her to another local farmer, the teenager rebels and runs away to join a mercenary company headed by Duke Phelan. There she finds much the sort of life she'd hoped for--fighting side by side with good friends, growing stronger, marching to new and interesting places, and earning respect through her actions.

It seems, though, that forces outside of herself are spurring Paks toward greater things. She is eager to accept challenges before her, but realizes too late that some adventures and experiences carry a terrible price.

I really liked the second and third books of this trilogy, as Paks begins to grow and change more, goes through more hardship, and discovers her internal strength. By the end of the story, she is an excellent character, at peace with herself in a way she wasn't throughout the early parts of the book.

I thought the beginning of the story was a bit slow, and Paks wasn't well defined enough. I'm not much of one for battle scenes, so those were hard to slog through, and I lost track of some of the characters. It's a really long story, and the author did a good job of tying things up and bringing characters from early on to the end. I just had a hard time keeping them straight.

Overall, this was a satisfying adventure story. I really liked the fact that women in the mercenary company were treated mostly as no big deal, and there was The idea of women's sexual tension on the streets in the first game or take a point.
