This is a story has several main characters but I am only going to list two: a young, innocent lady who is also a princess that must reawaken a white dragon to save the world from the dark lord and his wyverns(evil dragon-like creatures). Calli, who has dedicated herself to defeating the evil Tyrkam. The story focuses on fighting and escaping Tyrkam, his bandits, and Lusiradol, but has some romance in the calmer situations. The viewpoint shifts between many characters throughout sixty chapters(short chapters). Unfortunately, there are so many characters that this can get frustrating when a character your curious about doesn't reappear for a while. The story is usually fast and intense, which makes the sequel something to look forward to. There are wicthes, wizards,shape-shifters, good and evil dragons, and powerful good and evil forces. There are also those whose intentions are not clear yet. This book is probably not suitable for those under fifteen(though this might not be In some cases) to.

The Internal Conflict is More Important than the Dragon - Advice for Epic Fantasy Writers

วันจันทร์ที่ 2 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2553 § 0

When writing fantasy it is very easy to let your imagination soar and to create amazing worlds and incredible creatures; and while you may give your reader something to enjoy you won't really make a connection with him or her. The thing that will make the connection with your reader is the internal conflict your protagonist has to go through. This is what makes him or her human and this is where you have a memorable impact on your reader.

There is one steadfast rule when writing fiction and you probably know this rule. Your character has to grow. There has to be an internal path that is taken. And even if your writing takes place on an exotic world with a stable of wondrous creatures the main character is still human - and even if your main character is not human your reader is!

Your main character may have to rescue a damsel in distress, slay a dragon, or find the magical sword and all of this is good fun but it is not where the real power of epic fantasy lies. The power lies in how your main character must change in order to accomplish his goals. The real strength and the impelling part of the story isn't the slaying of the dragon, it's in the story of the main character's development of the courage to try.

A good example of this conflict comes from the ultimate work in the realm of epic fantasy: The Lord of the Rings. In it, Frodo Baggins has a ring that whisks him off into a nether world and makes him invisible in this one. But we don't actually see a whole lot of that very flashy idea. It only happens, very briefly, a few times. What we do get a lot of is the conflict that Frodo has, within himself, to stay centered in what he believes and to resist the temptations of the ring. This is a very major theme in the story and it is where we connect with Frodo. We can identify with his struggle to maintain what he believes and his struggle toward growth and development. The part about the powerful ring is albeit fun and one of the best things about fantasy but the reader can't really relate and make a real emotional connection. After all, how many people that you know who own a magical ring?

As you are writing your epic fantasy novel remember that all the wondrous worlds, scenes, and creatures are just in addition to the real meaning of epic fantasy -the struggle within us as humans.

The Book of Fire, the third book in Marjorie B. Kellogg's Dragon Quartet, takes the series to a whole new level, closing out with a most thrilling final hundred pages full of emotion and rife with surprises. This is a much different book than its predecessors The Book of Earth and The Book of Water (each of which you really must read before beginning this novel), largely because the dragon in question here, Fire, could not be more unlike his siblings. In terms of setting the stage, one must know that four dragons (Earth, Water, Fire, and Air) created the world and then began a long sleep from which they would awaken only at the end of that world. Something has gone horribly wrong with the world they created, though, and they have each awakened, apart and with limited knowledge of their histories. We met Earth and his dragon guide Erde in the Germanies of 913, Water and her guide N'Doch in the Africa of 2013, and now the shared quest of the dragons takes us, in answer to the summons they hear, to an earth even farther in the future and a dragon sibling who has traded any thoughts of his purpose for the trappings of power as an awesome god among men.

This future time is one of great misery, as only a few habitable regions remain on the ecologically ravaged planet. The first two dragons' suspicions about their brother Fire prove accurate; putting the lie to any notion that all dragons are good and noble, Fire terrorizes the people as a god and keeps his dragon guide Paia in complete ignorance as the high priestess of his temple. Erde, N'Doch, Water, and Earth do not come alone to this world, however, as Erde feels compelled to bring Baron Kothen with them. Kothen's ties to Erde's enemies at home have been broken now, leaving him a broken man, yet Erde knows instinctively that this man she has dreamed about and come to love is a necessary component in the puzzle of the dragon quest. Each of the main characters grows tremendously, none more so than N'Doch, much to my pleasure (for I was never able to really connect with him in the previous novel). Kothen's transformation in the latter stages of the tale is most welcome indeed, N'Doch steps up to become the kind of leader I wanted him to be, and Erde herself continues to grow in boldness and authority - although, to my sadness, heartache seems to remain her constant companion.

This novel features a much more elaborate plot than what has come before in the series, and Kellogg managed to genuinely surprise me with a few twists in the latter stages of this book. Fire is a magnificent, albeit misguided, dragon, and his story is far from complete as of yet - there is little feeling of closure here, setting the stage for what I hope will be a real humdinger of a conclusion in the fourth and final Book of Air. Filled with wonderful characters who grow and mature before our very eyes, The Book of Fire is a thrilling, absorbing read that builds upon and transforms the story as we have known it up to this point. The Dragon Guide circle may be complete, but the essence of the dragon quest, the whereabouts of the mighty dragon Air, and the future role Fire will play in events are all quite up in the air - not to mention the futures of these wonderful human characters and the outcomes of several tragic events going on still in the times and places from which they came.

Bring an Elf Or a Dragon to the Beach With You - Epic Fantasy Summer Reading Recommendations

วันอังคารที่ 4 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2553 § 0

This summer brings us a lot of great epic fantasy novels both from established authors continuing their series and from new authors with fresh new stories and worlds for you to discover. This article gives you recommendations from among the best and most promising.

The Masters release their sequels this summer

Many famous and established authors are releasing continuations of their series this summer and among these is a new book in the Genesis of Shannara series by Terry Brooks. Later in the summer he releases book III The Gypsy Morph.

Stephen Donaldson is the author of one of the most unusual fantasy series ever written. The main character is Thomas Covenant who is an anti-hero afflicted with leprosy. The land in which this all takes place is a richly woven tapestry unlike any other. He is releasing the next installment in the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant called Fatal Revenant. If you are interested in starting a totally new series from the start and you haven't read this one I highly recommend it. The first book in the series is Lord Fouls Bane.

Among all the big series books that are being released by big name authors the one that is almost guaranteed to shoot to the top of the best seller list is George R. R. Martins A Dance with Dragons. It is the latest installation in his Song of Ice and Fire series and a sure bet for good summer reading. But, it will not be released until September so that leaves beach reading out.

If you like movie tie-ins you the latest novel in David Farland's Runelords series might be a good choice for you. It is titled World Binder and it is book six in the series. The first book The Sum of All Men is currently being made into a major motion picture.

Another very popular series of books is the Kushiel's Legacy series. Written by Jacqueline Carey and the second trilogy is completed with the June publication of Kushiel's Mercy.

Newcomers and new series to the genre

If you are looking to start a new series or discover a new author there are several books coming out this summer that are getting a lot of critical acclaim. These include A Darkness Forged in Fire by Chris Evans. It is characterized as a masterful fantasy novel with a gritty feel and military bent. It promises a lot of sword-wielding action. This book is the first book in a new series called The Iron Elves.

A book that is being heralded by Amazon as one of the best fantasy books for 2007 is Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind It is the first book in an anticipated trilogy. If you missed out on this book last year this summer is your chance to catch up.

The prolific R.A. Salvatore has started a new trilogy of books called Transitions and the first book in this series is called The Orc King: Transitions Book I. It was released in early July. It is the latest installment in the adventures of the famous dark elf who first appeared in the New York Times bestseller The Lone Drow.

Another book to be released late this summer is The Ten Thousand by Paul Kearney who has been nominated for the British Fantasy Award. He has published several titles including the acclaimed Sea Beggars series.

If you are looking for new variations on Arthurian legend there are two interesting additions to the genre this summer: Shadow Lands by Simon Lister and Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff and Jack Whyte. Each one takes an interesting and unique look at the legend of Arthur.

If you are just looking for some lighter fantasy reading to take with you to the beach you might want to pick up a copy of Dragons: Worlds Afire. It is a collection of five novella length dragon stories from masters like Salvatore, Weis, and Hickman.

Return to the Classics

If you would like to brush up on some classics that you may have missed you should start with Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn. This book should be read multiple times by every fantasy reader. It is a staple of the genre. After that you might want to consider Tolkien's The Hobbit. If you are looking for a new classic you may want to take a look at The Children of Hurin which is a book that was started by Tolkien and finished by his son. It was published in the spring of 2007 and was chosen as one of the best books of the year by Amazon readers.

This summer is proving to be a great season for epic fantasy reading. There are lots of great books that have just been released and a lot more that will be released as the summer unfolds. So grab yourself a copy of one of these books and head off to the beach where you will discover elves, dragons, dwarves and many more wonderful things.
