If you write fantasy or are thinking about writing fantasy you probably are going to have medieval weapons in your created world. Today's reader of fantasy is very savvy when it comes to weapons and armor and you want your writing to be accurate and to make sense when it comes to weapons. They are often a big part of the story. In this article I explain some important things about medieval weapons, how to get them right, and I look at some of the more popular types Weapons.
Synchronization with the world
The world we live sticks and stones are very clear path, and now a weapon, it is necessary to consider what you really want your writing. We are around the stone, copper, and copper, iron, steel finally moved. There are now and Kevlar composite materials. It is important to understand that the skills and weapons are made here based on the knowledge artificers weapons. IfIf they have to please support backup, sophisticated weapons and narrative fiction. Steel is a good example. This world it's wooden hut grass and meaning, out of nowhere when you need a high level of knowledge and skills for making steel case consists Rerunaru see only weapon of these steels. SUMMARY of your use of this weapon, which was created to match the world. Another consideration is availability. Ifare using Iron then there should be iron mines in your world. Availability of materials is also an important factor. Our world went through an extended Iron Age because iron was very readily available and easy to work with.
A Medieval Arms Race
Weapons, armor and tactics are always in a state of balance with each other. As metal working skills improve better swords and weapons are made and the other side of the coin of this is that better armor is also made. Keep this in Brain. Not only is the weapon smith and forge better skills, and armor and fortifications. The offense, under the equal protection, there is always balance. This is an arms race in the Middle Ages, always moving forward yet always in balance.
Philosophy weapons
One super-weapon to make sure that you can believe in the power to classify the biggest drawbacks fantasy writer. These rights are often left armsthrough magic. It is too easy to have an ancient sword that was forged by a magical Dwarven blacksmith who captured a dragon and used its fire to harden the magical sword like no other sword has ever been hardened. While this can be fun to write and maybe fun to read you should do your best to avoid situations like this. It is too easy to rely on things like this as ways to get you out of difficult situations. Remember, everything has to be in balance, and everything has to make sense. If you do have a weapon, say that your hero is wielding, and it has unusual powers, you should balance this with something. What is the cost of this weapon or sword? Does wielding it bring danger to the wielder? Is there a fatigue factor? Consider this. It also adds dimension and excitement to the story. If our hero is hesitant to use the sword it will add a dimension of drama to the story. He better have a really good reason to use it.
Our Development of Weapons
Here is a rough Weapons in our world, such as how to develop improved technologies, please remember to look at factors related to the actual development, forge oven. Really moved metal working forward from the stove and the bellows and received a warm fire. Wood processing technology, played a key role in the development of weapons. There was an important part in other types of hands and arms with an ax head and a powerful beam assembly.
OldestIt seems easy to work with copper metal, copper, flexible, easy to operate software. But it is the same reason, limited use of these weapons. It was possible to have fairly short dagger, could not be drawn into a long sword. Arms 90% and 10% copper and tin bronze (10 craft were found to develop a blend% or Friday). This development is 3.4% larger weapons, daggers are much longer, can be as short or as long as the sword. Butthese short swords were predominantly for stabbing with the point. Bronze was very effective for thrusting weapons such as dirks, daggers, short swords, and spearheads but they were not very effective for keeping and edge and slashing. Bronze axe heads mounted on wooden handles were very popular. They saw a lot of use and were reasonably effective.
Iron had a dramatic effect on weapons. It was readily available, easy to work with, and it was easy to sharpen. The big impact this had was to Weapons makes it easy to spread wider. Big chill the development of iron found where metal is heated, used in melting cast forging hammer. This technique is stronger than iron, more reliable than the brittle bronze weapons and many more. Because the choice of iron metal for many centuries, these factors for the relative affluence.
Steel is an important metal weapons or armor. It is still difficult than it is substantially ironHave a certain amount of flexibility spring back when he stressed. This spring back can be used under much more flexible and durable. Steel is in the process of forging it is simply an additional carbon steel. Carbon is usually the form of coal. Steel is the correct amount of carbon that a lot of artistic skills necessary to train properly to be added to the steel quenched. (Is the process of quenching and tempering heatfire and cooling with water). Steel brings weapons to new heights because it can be used to make longer, more durable weapons, and it can hold an edge extremely well, even on just one side. One big aspect of steel in combat is the affect it has on the speed of the fight. Weapons that are lighter and stronger means combatants can move much quicker. This was an important aspect of the arms race.
And the pinnacle of this development might lie in the rapier. It is a weapon that is extremely light yet still very strong. It is thin enough to be used as an effective thrusting weapon yet it still has an edge that can be used for slashing. We may be able to take this a further step to the fencing foil in that it is a thrusting only weapon that can be wielded extremely fast and is used to find even the smallest gaps in an opponent's armor.
Types of weapons
Here is a quick look and explanation of some common medieval weapons.
Dagger - The first effective metal Weapons. Originally used as a weapon, they simply press the development of skills in carrying metal that can be used to advantage to reduce. Was the ancestor of the sword dagger.
Dark, long dagger could be used to reduce a push. They are usually made from the cut edge of a sword down. They were the length of 6 inches to 22 inches.
Sword - The sword is a huge change, which is usually handed steel weapon, sharpened on both sides, there is no effectThey stick a weapon in hand.
Katana - Japanese sword edge bent to one side. Effective use of push and cut.
Sword - long curved sword sharp reduction in most of the weapons on one side.
Two hand sword - the length is usually between 60 to 70 inch sword. This is a two hand, effectively had to perform heavy duty. This is an average size person very much and it can take more than this type of sword to flyEffective weapon in the fight against the line of battle, especially against enemies wielding pole arms. The battle was limited to 1:1 so you can chalk swing the sword, fighting hard to have more control over the situation, it is often surrounded the base of the blade.
Paul weapons - these are just my favorite sounds - weapons are mounted on both ends of the bar. When together, arms battle group used to create a very large defenseor offense. A pole weapon could also generate tremendous force because of its long swing. They were also often used against combatants on horseback. A halberd is a good example of this. It typically had an axe for slashing, a point for thrusting, and a hook that could be used to pull an opponent down from atop a horse.
Mace - This is a one handed weapon that has a wooden handle and a steel or iron ball at the end of it. Sometimes this metal ball has spikes. It was effective as a crushing weapon and it could generate enough force to break a foes armor. The spikes could penetrate the hardest armor.
Flail - this is a wooden handled weapon with a length of chain. At the end of the chain was a mace ball either with or without spikes. When swung it generates tremendous
force and one of the uses for a flail was its ability to reach up and over an opponent's shield.
Axe - Axes were an effective weapon that could be created with moderate metal working skill. This is because the axe head could be bulkier and have less length that needed to keep an edge. This head would normally be mounted on a wooden handle. Axes came in many variations typically one side with an edge and the other with a point. Some axes had edges on both sides and a point at the top end tip of the handle for thrusting.
Even though you are writing fantasy and creating a fantasy world you still have to ground the world in ways that make sense and you have to give your Weapons feel real. That they are building you, they have pretty medieval weapons probably knowledge of the reader for sensible rules means to adapt the world must follow, and are used and how you how Masu.

King of Nod an epic ghost story
by Scott Fad
What does the past have to do with the future? Just about everything, and there's really no escaping it. In King of Nod by Scott Fad, readers will be immersed into the past, slammed into the present and hoping for a better future.
Sweetpatch Island, South Carolina, is steeped in history. From its earliest days as a Native American picnic spot, to its dark times of slavery and racial clash, right up to its current occupants' fascination with digging into that past and printing it book form, or looking what is dead and gone right in the eye, the past has everything to do with the future. For Boo Taylor, his life is a series of moments of digging at the truth. Finding out that his parents aren't who he thinks they are is the first step to his leaving childhood behind, and that began on the playground at school with a fistfight. Confronting Laylee Colebriar is the next step, and she holds tight to her secrets. As Boo's life progresses readers discover that he is not your usual rural kid. Laylee isn't your typical housekeeper either. Her ancient ways go back for generations. To Boo, she is a substitute mother, and so much more.
Boo bears witness to some horrible things. He pokes his nose out looking for trouble, and finds it. From the old Chaliboque mansion, to old lady Mamie Sturvant's house, wicked things are lurking and Boo tends to stir them up. Every so often a young boy will disappear on the island and rumors fly of a beast who is exacting revenge for old Joker Tribbit and his widow Bathsheba. Tribbit was lynched, stabbed and burned by an angry mob of white men and ever since, the island has been cursed. Folks say that Bathsheba was a Gullah witch and she is out for blood. The people bring blood on themselves too in their red-neck bigoted war of hatred with each other. Churches and schools are burned, people die, and faith in what they believe in is either trampled or exalted. Through it all though, perhaps because of some of it, Boo finds love. Will it be enough to break the curse of Sweetpatch Island? Will anything ever help to put all those ghosts to rest?
Scott Fad has indeed written an epic ghost story. His plot is a wicked, twisted work of art that will have readers looking at it from every angle and seeing something different every time. His characters are rich with life, full of love, torn apart by hate, and tortured by numerous evils, within and without. His style is smooth and haunting, exuding southern grace and hidden truths. With every bit of the puzzle shared there is yet another hiding in plain site, like so many pictures tacked to a wall making it hard to pick out just one image. King of Nod is one of my all time favorites.

I was taken a bit off guard by No Man's War, I'd seen Mr. Scalzi's name whilst tramping about at the Science Fiction Awards Watch Website. I noticed that Mr. Scalzi wrote this book mostly online then sold it as his very first work. Zoe's Tale is the fourth book in this saga, and I see that it has been nominated for the Hugo this year, so I have at least three more of this epic to look forward to. I say I was taken off guard because Old Man's War is a very fine work! I read the whole book in just three days. Mr. Scalzi has a very good sense of character, in many ways it is 'what he leaves out' that distinguishes him. He keeps the book at a good clip and doesn't waste our time with superfluous embellishments that lesser writers of the Genre tend to fall for.
Old Man's War begins with essentially an old man, John Perry, who is 70 or so and a widower, he lives on an Earth that has the ability to colonize the star systems of outer Space. The catch here, if you're old, get out and leave forever. You can not be returned. The CDF of the (colonial IDF), the earth, CDF interesting distinction from the world was not sharing the responsibility of the entire space of non-payment. It is not known and these operating without jurisdiction can imagine the earth as a happy one interesting twist! Old daysperson joins the CDF they are given new bodies and this is what John Perry does... but with the sad note that his beloved wife 'Kathy' has died, as they had planned to join up together. The just of this 'second life' is that you get a whole new life with the 'nothing to lose' attitude. Scalzi doesn't go into the dimensions of this choice... he just has John Perry on his way to the CDF, where he will get a new body (green) and will have to fight for ten years a host of alien invaders Please planetary community. However, it is a safe environment in space, the number of other life forms is bad for the planet interested in any smaller collection. Therefore, create a new body in his living Jonperi participate in this war.
Not only put a Sukarutsuiboru, where growing number of issues, refer to the Jonperi actually respected member of CDF crack. The book continues with several issues at any time, JohnShell shocked a few people lost through this with him came also the "family" he has been trained to maintain contact. Survival as a soldier, not 30% better ... this is true of many of his friends are dead. This book is really John and his army to fight the battle of coral Whaidians Pick ... Whaidians planet where people are disabled and the CDF was destroyed by the fleet destroyed by Hasa'superiour' alien race's gift to the Whaidians, John Perry survives this assault being rescued by a 'Ghost Brigade' these are soldiers like John but from the dead DNA of people who signed up for CDF on Earth but died before they could enroll... like John's wife Kathy.... and of course that is what happens, as John's wife is suddenly before him but she isn't really his wife but an artificially engineered persona named Jane Sagan.
As the book continues John gets to know Jane Sagan and it's Very interesting, John (two of his old friend) returns to the coral to survive the attack only soldiers. Therefore, CDF quite how to Whaidians disaster is to learn was trying to figure out where to enter the Coral area. And that effort to win and courage to create a colony, the last part of this John is a very important part. Degli Scalzi's really a good thing he is a great skill and handleSchool.
Write a new war Jonsukarutsui old, he has also been awarded the wrong side of John Campbell.

The third book of the best-selling Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel picks up immediately after the end of the second novel The Valley of the Horses. The heroine of the series, Ayla, and her new lover Jondalar have just encountered a band of people whose identity is based on mammoth hunting. The meeting is shocking for Ayla because until this point in her seventeen years of life, she has never seen another living human except for Jondalar. From the age of five, Ayla had been raised by a cousin species of humans, known in the novel as Clan that are presumably Neanderthal people.
Ayla's upbringing leaves her without any cultural knowledge of how to live among her own kind. Her first experiences among the humans are bewildering and frightening. The group of mammoth hunters who take in Ayla and Jondalar designate their home as the Lion Camp, and Ayla takes this as a good sign because her totem animal is the cave lion that acts as her spiritual guide in life.
The people of the Lion Camp are also captivated by Ayla because she is beautiful, skilled as a healer, and rides a horse. The author does an excellent job in the novel of imagining the beginnings of animal domestication and how people might react to seeing for the first time a horse that obeys a human. Auel's approach to the process of animal domestication is plausible, and the way her narrative demonstrates the benefits that the animals brought to humans is compelling. Ayla's horse allows her to scout prey for the hunters more quickly and the horse helps to carry more meat back to the camp.
In this third novel, Auel gets to delve into an illuminating exploration of how early people might have lived upon the ice age steppes of Europe and Central Asia. Through Ayla's eyes that know only the culture of the Clan with its strict gender roles and unquestioning obedience to a group leader, the culture of her own people presents an astounding contrast. All that she was prohibited from doing among the Clan, Ayla is free to do among the mammoth hunters. She can hunt; speak her mind, laugh, and cry. She is also introduced to art, music and communicating with written symbols. These abstract concepts were unknown to the Clan. Throughout the narrative, the ability of humans to experiment with new ideas and innovate were presented in contrast to the Clan ways that are based on memory. Among the Clan, things are done as they were always done. They are not questioned and as a result they are not improved. This is not to say that the Clan lacked extraordinary skills. The healing arts Ayla learned among the Clan are highly effective, which brings her respect among the mammoth hunters. However, her association with the Clan is also controversial because most humans consider the Clan to be animals and call them by the derogatory term flatheads. The prejudice against the Clan is a source of conflict between Ayla and many characters in the novel.
Auel presents the mammoth hunter society as having looser gender roles, which she illustrates to be a strength. Because women and men can cross over gender lines to cook, hunt, gather, butcher, and so forth, they are more productive because everyone can pitch in on certain tasks when needed. The cooperative mindset of the prehistoric people is also an important theme of the novel. Although people certainly have their own interests and talents, they exist within a society that tacitly expects everyone to work together for survival.
Because readers of The Mammoth Hunters will be coming from the perspective of an individualistic and patriarchal culture, they will find this novel especially enthralling as it presents a society that respects and values women, bases hereditary on matrilineal descent, and depends on cooperative efforts. However, the prehistoric people in the novel are not selfless communists. They seek to improve their status and collect more valuable goods. They trade in possessions and skills and frequently gamble.
Amid the finely detailed portrayal of prehistoric human society, the gripping emotional drama of Ayla commands the narrative as always. A wrenching love triangle emerges among Ayla and Jondalar and her new suitor Ranec. As this romantic storm brews, most readers will likely wish for Ayla to stick by Jondalar, but because Ayla is such a endearing and powerful character, you, like me, will probably decide that you will follow Ayla wherever she travels. Being mad at her is impossible. She is a strikingly vivid character, both larger than life and totally familiar. Ayla represents a literary triumph for Auel, who I believe has delivered yet another brilliant novel. I praise Auel's writing so highly because her characters became real for me. I think about them when I am not reading the books. I worry about them. I wish I could talk to them. In The Mammoth Hunters, Auel has created that most blissful of reading experiences: one that is emotionally tangible.
For readers who like adventure, drama, romance, powerful spirituality, and contemplating the mysterious origins of humanity, The Mammoth Hunters is highly recommended. I rate it five tusks of mammoth ivory.

#1: A Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin)
This brilliant fantasy series starts with A Game of Thrones. What can I say about this series other then read it! It's well-regarded as one of the best fantasy series. This is a novel that leaves most other fantasy books in the dust. It's the best of the best, the crème de le crème. Its gritty, brutal, not for the faint of hearted and just so damn addicting.
Martin has created something special with this book. The vast scope of his plots span continents and like an onion, each plot hides beneath it the other. The author does new things with the fantasy genre: no character is safe from the author's noose; at any moment main characters can die. This seemingly ties various plots into twisted tangles, but martin is the master trickster and purposefully weaves the story arcs into something even stronger. It's almost impossible to predict the plot lines. What's also interesting is the author takes dastardly characters and slowly remakes them, over the course of the series, into incredibly interesting - even likable -- personalities.
If you are new the genre and are looking for the best of the best, read Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (starts with A Game of Thrones) for a delightful ride into the fantastic world of fantasy. This is a novel that shows how good fantasy books can be!
#2: The Malazan Book of the Fallen (Steven Erikson)
Fantasy these days has been pretty stagnant, at least in the epic fantasy genre, since Tolkien. Fortunately, Erickson remakes the genre into something radically different, something unique and compelling. Erickson's work is vast in scope, tying dozens of plot lines into a cohesive whole. No other author can write battle scenes like this man. When he writes battle, you see it. If you want some fantasy where the action is so sharp you can feel the blade cut skin, battles so loud you can hear the crash of spear on shield, then pick up this astounding series. This book is genre redefining and hands down one of the best fantasy books you can read.
#3: The Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss)
A stunning debut, The Name of the Wind has one of the most compelling stories you'll ever read. Every one I've recommended this book to raves about it. And, I'm willing to bet, you will too. Rothfuss takes some standard fantasy conventions reformulates them in to a superbly addicting blend. Great writing, a very compelling plot, fantastic characterization, and well-drawn world make this book one of my top fantasy book recommendations. This is a fantasy book for women, men, and children alike. All I can say is: read this fantasy novel!
#4: Tigana (Guy Gaveriel Kay)
Kay is the best character writer in the fantasy genre. He writes fantasy books that are not so much about the "fantasy" aspect as they are about character. And what character's he has indeed. You won't find cookie cutouts in his world. This man is a master wordsmith. His prose is beautiful and his plotting is always tight. Tigana is perhaps the most emotional fantasy book I have read. If you want to experience the whole gamut human emotions, read this hauntingly beautiful novel. As a bonus, this is a standalone novel, proving that standalones can bump shoulders with the big boy epic fantasies too. This is one fantasy book that will make you cry. I guarantee it.
#5: The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R Tolkien)
There is a saying that's pretty close to reality: "The world is divided into two groups: those who have read Lord of the Rings and those who have not." If you count yourself a fantasy aficionado, you owe it to yourself to have read Lord of the Rings. It's the father of all fantasy, a book that spawned a genre, and a masterpiece of the English Language.
Tolkien has always been about the world in which his characters live, never about the characters which live in his world. He created a world full of myth and legend, starkly real and full of mystery. There is always some strange power deep in a mountain, or some magical glade in the heart of a forest. There are worlds deep in the world, and worlds high in the heavens. It's a land full of wonder, a world too large to explore; it's an earth that still has mysteries and unknown lands.
#6: The Blade Itself (The First Law: Book One) (Joe Abercrombie)
A rousing entry into the fantasy genre. It's action packed, witty, twisted, funny, and so addictive it should be illegal. This is "Lord of the Rings." The Blade Itself is a new type of fantasy. It takes the standard fantasy conventions and weaves them into something completely new. Those jaded on how trivial and cliché the fantasy genre has become will feel a hurricane of fresh air with this book. It's probably one of the most remarkable books that's come out in a long time and has rejuvenated the fantasy genre. One of the best fantasy books, hands down.
#7: The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)
I can truthfully say that Jordan is the King of Fantasy, if not in complexity, then in page count. This monstrously big series spans over 13 massive books (each at least 700 pages). Including "A Wheel of Time" on this list invariably riles certain people. The past several years a new type of fantasy has come to the fore of the genre: gone are the hopefully optimistic village boys wielding magic swords on a quest to defeat the impossible; in their place, a gritty fantasy has arisen; a stark genre where the very conventions of what it means to be a hero are challenged: worlds are made of gray not black and white; heroes may be both a villain and savior; love is powerful, but ultimately ephemeral; heroes die and villains live. It's complex stuff that is often genre blending.
The Wheel of Time is a cornerstone in the fantasy genre. It's practically impossible to browse through the fantasy section of any bookstore without running into Jordan's half a dozen books, all occupying a prodigious amount of shelf space. Jordon's monstrosity - and yes, it is a monstrosity - weighs in at 12 books so far, enough to break more than one back.
While the quality of the latter half of his series dramatically decreased as Jordan became lost in his own world, the final book is scheduled to be released next year. Jordan passed away this year, but Brandon Sanderson is completing the novel.
As a whole, The Wheel of Time is rattling adventure that will suck you in. It's massive in scope, but the world is meticulously drawn, the characters (mostly) well drawn, and a very addictive plot that spans over twelve very large books. With the impact these books have had on the fantasy genre, you owe itself to at least read the first book. It's a great fantasy book, and a whole lot of fun!
#8: The Farseer Trilogy (Robin Hobb)
Hobb is one of the best characterization writers in the Fantasy genre. Her characters are vividly real, leaping out of the pages into our minds as living characters. She has no qualms about allowing her protagonist to suffer. If her protagonist falls into a pit, no Dues Ex Machina breaks the fall -- the protagonist will break both legs -- and likely the arms too. Her Farseer books are full of fantastic characters and an interesting, mysterious world to explore. Toss in a gripping plot, and these books make for some fantastic reads.
Hobb is perhaps the best character writer in the fantasy genre. If you are looking for some meticulously drawn characters and a world full of wonder and mystery, read these books. Hobb never stoops to using Dues Ex Machina in her novels; her characters suffer, and suffer greatly, which makes them all the more compelling. Those looking for a hero that can survive every situation without a scratch by pulling out a new superpower, look elsewhere. There is something deeply compelling about the world she creates in this series. Maybe it's the mysteries promised by her world, the faraway places that promise secrets, or maybe it's the vivid characters that jump out from the very sheets of paper into our minds and real and living characters. Whatever it is, this novel has it.
I highly recommend that every fantasy reader should read this trilogy. It's a masterpiece of fantasy and one of the most emotional fantasy books in the entire genre.
#9: The Darkness That Comes Before (R. Scott Bakker)
Fantasy books with real philosophy - who would have thought? Those of you looking for more of the "village boy defeats dark wizard conceit", look elsewhere. Those that want a brutal, gritty, twisted story that's as cerebral as it is action packed, read this book/series. This is a fantasy series that does new things with the genre and I highly recommend it as one of the best fantasy books in the genre.
#10: Mythago Wood (Robert Holdstock)
Myth and reality coexist in this stunning and beautiful novel by Robert Holdstock. With a theme slightly similar to Neil Gaiman's American Gods, Mythago Woods is a treat you will relish. If you are bored with all that epic fantasy pervading the shelves these days, well, pick this wonder full and different fantasy novel up.
